Everything international couples need to know before planning a luxury wedding in the South of France.

There are places in the world that simply feel like they were made for celebrations.

For me, Provence has always been one of them.

Perhaps it's the way the afternoon sun turns centuries, old stone villages into shades of honey and gold. Perhaps it's the endless vineyards, the fragrant lavender fields, the olive groves that have stood for generations, or the long summer evenings where dinner stretches late into the night beneath strings of softly glowing lights.

These are the moments couples often picture when they first begin dreaming about a destination wedding in the South of France.

And honestly?

After years of planning weddings for international couples throughout Provence and the French Riviera, I've learned that the most successful weddings aren't necessarily the largest or the most extravagant.

You're reading contracts in another language, trying to understand local customs, organising accommodation for guests travelling from across the globe, and making important decisions from thousands of kilometres away.

In fact, one of the first things almost every couple says during our initial consultation is exactly the same:

Planning a wedding in another country isn't something most people have experience with.

Step One: Find Your Wedding Venue Before You Do Anything Else

If I could give every newly engaged couple just one piece of advice, it would be this:

Don't start by looking for flowers.

Don't start by choosing colours.

Don't start by booking photographers.

And don't spend months creating Pinterest boards before you've chosen your venue.

Everything begins with the venue.

It is, without question, the single most important decision you'll make during the planning process because every other decision depends on it.

Your venue determines your wedding date.

It influences your overall budget.

It shapes the atmosphere of your celebration.

It affects your guest count, accommodation options, transportation logistics, supplier availability, and even your wedding design.

Choosing a venue isn't simply about finding somewhere beautiful.

It's about finding somewhere that works beautifully for the experience you want to create.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see among couples planning from abroad is assuming that finding a venue is simply a matter of scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest.

While social media is wonderful for inspiration, it rarely tells the whole story.

A château may photograph beautifully, but perhaps it only accommodates twenty overnight guests.

A breathtaking vineyard may have strict music curfews.

A seaside villa may require all suppliers to travel considerable distances, increasing logistical costs.

A hidden estate might have breathtaking ceremony gardens but limited accommodation nearby.

These are details that rarely appear on social media.

Yet they have an enormous impact on the success of your wedding weekend.

This is why I always encourage couples to think beyond the photographs.

Instead of asking, "Is this venue beautiful?"

Ask yourself:

"Will this venue allow us to create the experience we want for ourselves and our guests?"

That question changes everything.

Think About Your Guests

One of the things I love most about destination weddings is that they become so much more than a single day.

Your guests aren't simply attending your wedding.

They're travelling across the world to celebrate with you.

For many, it becomes their holiday.

That's why I always encourage couples to think about the guest experience from the very beginning.

Where will everyone stay?

How long will transfers take?

Can guests explore nearby villages?

Are there wonderful restaurants nearby?

Will grandparents find the venue accessible?

Is there enough accommodation for everyone who wants to stay together?

These practical considerations often become just as important as the venue itself.

In my experience, the weddings guests remember most aren't necessarily the most extravagant.

They're the ones where everything feels easy.

Where transportation runs smoothly.

Where accommodation is nearby.

Where everyone feels relaxed enough to truly enjoy every moment.

That's no accident.

It's thoughtful planning.

Start Earlier Than You Think

If you're planning a wedding in 2027 or 2028, now is the perfect time to begin your venue search.

The South of France remains one of Europe's most desirable wedding destinations, and many of the region's finest venues accept only a limited number of celebrations each year.

Some couples are surprised to discover that popular weekends during May, June, and September can be reserved nearly two years in advance.

Beginning early doesn't mean rushing your decisions.

It simply means giving yourself the freedom to choose the venue you truly love rather than settling for what's still available.
